WEST VALLEY CITY — The world-famous “Utah monolith” may have been removed, but a new one that very closely resembles the original now stands in a front yard on Wakefield Way.
This time the ‘artist’ isn’t exactly a mystery.
“I’d like to see how far we can go with it,” said Robbie Gowers, who spent more than five hours with his neighbors to create a life-size replica for his popular Christmas display. “We were joking around, you know, if we could create this and bring this here, maybe we could get a bunch of people over here to see the lights and come see it, get their pictures with it and spread our cause of what we’re doing with the lights and the display.”
Gowers said in past years, events he hosted around the 60,000-light display near 6400 South Wakefield Way helped to raise charitable donations for the Mascot Miracles Foundation*.
In the pandemic however, the events that brought hundreds of onlookers have not been possible, and Gowers said traffic, in general, has been lighter so far this year.
“We’re trying to at least give a little bit of normalcy with doing the lights,” Gowers said. “Everybody can come see it. You can watch from your car, tune your radio to it, listen to everything and stay safe. We’re complying with 2020.”
So far, Gowers said the presence of the monolith has seemed to stoke the interest of onlookers.
Several stopped Thursday evening to take pictures from their cars or even get out and pose in front of it.
“Everybody that comes over (says) ‘eh, is that the monolith?'” Gowers chuckled. “I guess everybody has to have a monolith now.”
