Have You Seen This? Pony trying to jump over tiny step is all of us at the end of 2020

December 29, 2020 by performresours

THE PRECIPICE — Raise your hand if 2020 has been a bit of a surprise and harder than any you imagined.

Thankfully, I don’t have the technology to see through your phones or laptops to know if you’re raising your hand, but I’ll ask my buddy in the NSA to tell me how many of you did. Regardless, I’m guessing a lot of you raised your hands.

I’m not sure about you, but at the end of 2019 I didn’t think much about the clock hitting 12:00 and the calendar flipping over, but that’s not the case this year. In fact, the end of 2019 was a lot like the first time I jumped off a platform at a swimming pool.

The platform was 30 feet high and my young brain didn’t think a thing about it. I watched others doing flips and dives off of it. All I was doing was taking a small step and splashing into some water. I went up the ladder, walked to the edge and took the leap … Little did I know you had to keep straight, so when I landed sideways it was a real shock. It hurt and I had learned my lesson that it was scarier than I thought.

Now, after learning that lesson of jumping into 2020 willy-nilly, going into 2021 is like the first time I went off the high dive after that platform jump.

It wasn’t as high, but I was terrified. I mean, do you remember all the madness that happened on that platform? So I stepped to the edge, then back, then to the edge, then back and I repeated that dance to the methodic tones of people yelling at me to jump or get out of the way.

This is why I feel this little pony is all of us as we stand on the precipice of 2021.

The pony has a very small step to jump over, but he’s terrified. He’s not sure of himself or what the jump will bring. He second-guesses time after time and then finally does it. When he lands safely on the other side he’s ecstatic and running in circles loving life as his heart pumps a little faster.

When I finally went off that high dive, I loved it and spent all my time at the pool right there.

So, let’s take on 2021 like this tiny pony and overweight adolescent John. Step to the edge, look into the abyss if you like, even step back to collect your courage. But remember that past pains and trails are just that: past. Look to the future with trepidation, but also with excitement. Excitement for the unknown, excitement for the adventure, and excitement for new experiences. Let’s all hope 2021 is better than 2020 and then jump in like the little pony and make the best of it despite our apprehension.
